FALL 2023 CLASS REGISTRATION -
Class Registration will open to members on 9/6 and to non-members on 9/8. Classes start 9/25.
Class Prices listed are for non members. All Class prices are $150 for a 6 week session, 4 week classes are $100. EXCEPT for Controlled Walking and Improving your Recall ($50 each, no discounts) and a special offering of Control Unleashed taught by Susan Mann at $200 (no vouchers or discounts accepted for this class).
Please make sure you are able to attend at least 4 of the 6 sessions to earn credit for completing a class.
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy
Description: This is a basic socialization and early obedience class for puppies up to 12 months old. At the completion of the program, your puppy can earn an AKC S.T.A.R. puppy certificate. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be taught. Other puppy behaviors we practice are handling the puppy, socialization with other people and puppies etc. Puppies do not have to be registered with AKC nor do they need to be purebred. Beginner obedience, Canine Good Citizen preparation, Pre-Agility are all reasonable next steps following this S.T.A.R. Puppy class.

Puppy 4-6 months
This class is for puppies 4-6 months of age and will offer fun ways for your puppy to learn the of basic skills like sit, down, come, stay, leave it and loose leash walking. There will be fun puppy games during the class to make sure the puppies stay mentally stimulated!
Pre-requisites: None
Equipment: flat collar 4’ leash, freedom harness.

Puppy 7-12 months
This class is for puppies 7-12 months of age and is designed as a continuation of learning and refining the basic skills covered in Puppy 1 (sit, down, come, stay, leave it and loose leash walking) There will be fun puppy games during the class to make sure the puppies stay mentally stimulated!
Pre-requisites: Puppy 1 or Instructor Approval
Equipment: flat collar, 4’ leash, freedom harness

Life Skills for Dogs
Dogs will learn to sit, down, stay, greet people properly.
Handlers will learn how to get a dogs attention. How to move from lure training to marker reward training. How to control a dog when greeting people out walking or at the door at home. How to teach and use a stay in position with distractions about.
Prerequisites: Be able to walk on Leash
Not aggressive towards people or dogs
Beginner Obedience/Rally I
Description: This is a basic class for handlers and dogs to learn skills needed to prepare for Obedience and Rally Classes. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be covered. The class is intended for graduates of our STAR Puppy program, Puppy 1 & 2 classes and Life Skills. This class prepares teams for many of our more advanced obedience classes. Recommended for dogs 7 months and older.

Beginner Obedience/Rally II
Description: This class is the next class for those who have completed the Beginner Obedience/Rally Class (Part I). We will focus on the skills needed for advancing to Beginner Obedience and Rally Classes. Skills covered will be beginning heeling with patterns for obedience and rally, sit and down stays, recalls fronts and finishes.

CGC Test Prep
Description: This class will teach you to train your dog for the 10 specific behaviors required by the AKC for the Canine Good Citizen certification. Please note: This is for dogs with some previous obedience training. Your dog should be able to walk alongside you on leash, know some basic commands such as sit, down, stay and come. We'll help you with the rest.

CGCA Test Prep
Description: The AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program. Dogs who pass the AKC Community Canine test earn the official AKC Community Canine title that is designated by the letters “CGCA” (Advanced CGC) on the dog’s title record. Whereas Canine Good Citizen tests are most often tested in a ring and situations are simulated , the AKC Community Canine test is done in real situations including at shows, classes, and in the community.

Prep for Therapy Work
We will teach to the 13 specific behaviors required by Therapy Dogs International for the TDI certification. Test requirements can be found at the TDI Website. Class prerequisites are AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification and / or CDTC (or similar) Beginner Obedience. Dogs who do not meet these prerequisites will require instructor review and approval prior to starting the class and class enrollment is not guaranteed.

Controlled Walking
Description: Does your dog drag you on a walk, pull you through doorways, lunge at other animals, jerk you off your feet? Three 30 minute sessions will teach how to take back control on your walk. 6 teams only. This class is 30 minutes long, starts June 28th, and lasts 3 weeks.

Improving Your Recall
Description: Does your dog come every time you call? If he/she doesn't, do you know what to do? This class will show you how to follow through should your dog "ignore" your come command. Dogs taking this class should already have a reward based recall. We will challenge their understanding of coming when called. This class is 30 minutes long, starts June 28th, and lasts 3 weeks.

Control Unleashed
Control Unleashed is a program developed by Leslie McDevitt, that is a fabulous foundation for working with your dog. CU helps you and your dog develop clear 2 way communication about what your dog can handle, while improving the ability to concentrate on task in the face of distractions. It is a great start for puppies, a super way to help adolescents through a difficult time, and helpful for any dog experiencing issues. Since this is a special offering of this class offered by others at a higher cost, no vouchers or discounts will be accepted.

Tricks
Description: This class will teach various tricks using luring as well as shaping to allow dog/handler teams to have fun in a low stress environment, improve their training skills, and learn tricks to prepare for AKC Tricks Title testing.

Competition Obedience/
Rally Classes
Rally Novice Fundamentals
This class is for students who are new to the sport of AKC rally, or for those who want to brush up on the skills needed to successful compete in AKC Rally Novice. AKC Rules and Regulations will be introduced. The focus of the class will be on learning the correct way to perform each exercise at the rally novice level. We will also work on improving the skills needed to succeed in Rally Novice including leash handling, heeling, sits and downs, fronts and finishes, and pivots. Short courses will be introduced building on the signs that are being covered each week.
Prerequisites: Dogs must be able to work in close proximity to people and other dogs. Students should have knowledge of basic obedience exercises as taught in the Beginner Obedience/Rally I and II class.
Equipment Required: Regular collar and 4' or 6' leash.

Rally Novice Runthroughs
Rally AKC rules and regulations will be reviewed. One Novice Rally course will be set up each week, possibly and if space permits, a smaller ring will be set up for practicing exercises. Students will receive practice and coaching in reading signs and running courses. We'll cover everything you need to enter your first AKC Rally Novice Competition.
Prerequisites: This class is for students who have knowledgeof basic obedience exercises as taught in the Beginner Obedience/Rally I and II classes. Teams must have command of basic obedience skills such as heel, down, front, finish, and sit. The dog must demonstrate that the handler is in control of the dog’s behavior while on leash.
Equipment Required: regular collar (no harnesses) and a 4' or 6' leash.

Rally Intermediate/Advanced
This class is designed to provide experience in running AKC Intermediate/Advanced level courses. Students will receive practice and coaching in a run-through format. Intermediate teams are welcome to use a regular collar & leash but will not execute any jumps. Prerequisites: This class is open to students who have completed the Rally Novice class and have at least one leg in Rally Novice or have the instructor’s permission.

Competition Beginner Novice
Description: This class prepares handler/dog teams to compete for the Beginner Novice Title (BN). The required exercises consist of Heeling on Leash while following signs, Figure Eight, Sit for Exam, Sit- Stay walk around the ring, and Recall. Prerequisites: Dogs must be able to heel on leash, sit, stay, and recall, or instructor’s approval.

Description: For those teams that are presently competing in Open Obedience, have completed their Novice title, or are successfully competing in Novice Obedience. All teams should have foundation skills for Open. Additional classes needed: Novice Prep &/or Ring Ready Prep or instructor approval. Students must have Novice Obedience title.

Agility Classes
Pre-Agility
Description: This class will cover targeting, focus and attention and beginning baby obstacle familiarization. Dogs should know sit stay for ten seconds and come when called. Dog should be able to work in a ring with other dogs.

> Prerequisites: a beginner class such as star puppy, CU, CGC, Tricks, beginner obedience or instructor approval.

Pre-Agility 2
This class is intended for teams that have completed "Pre Agility 1."
This class will build the foundation for how to engage with your dog to be able to work with your dog in a distracting environment. You will also learn how to teach the dog impulse control. Focus will be on teaching the dog how to think and offer behaviors to create a true understanding of skills. Specific goals for this class will be teaching the handler how to create object focus and handler focus from the dog. Handler focus and object focus are the key foundational components of training agility that are built from engagement and impulse control. There will be handler and dog teams working at the same time. Off leash control with a reliable recall is REQUIRED. This class is held indoors.

Agility 1 - Groundwork
Description: This class is designed to follow pre-agility. Having a dog that offers behaviors is an advantage for training in agility. You will learn the technique for using this approach as well as teaching the dog how to jump, increasing focus, and basic handling. You will also learn the techniques for developing drive lines, beginning contact skills on a plank, developing independent object confidence, weave poles, and 2 X 2 entries. Dogs must reliably come when called and must work off leash around other dogs without visiting. This class is held indoors at the Sky High Building in Catawba, SC. Prerequisites: Pre agility or instructor approval.

Scent Work Classes
Scent Work Foundations 2
This class is a continuation of Intro to Scent Work Foundations 1. This class continues the use of food (primary reinforcement) to build the dog’s search drive. The dogs will work more complex scent puzzles in a variety of elements. Handlers will continue to work on handling skills and learning to read their dog’s changes of behavior.

SW Intermediate
In this class, dogs and handlers will work with more complex scent puzzles in a variety of elements at the Novice and Advanced level. This class will also work on more advanced handling skills and more advanced scent theory and learning to set hides.

Scent Work
Scent Work Skills is a four week session in which each class focuses on a different skill. This session will This class is a continuation of Intro to Scent Work 1. This class continues the use of food (primary reinforcement) to build the dog’s search drive. The dogs will work more complex scent puzzles in a variety of elements. Handlers will continue to work on handling skills and learning to read their dog’s changes of behavior. PRQ: Intro to Scent Work 1 AND Instructor Approval Class size: 6 Distractors, Thresholds, High/Medium/Low, and Multiple Hides/Stickiness.
Prerequisites: Dog has completed SW1.5, but is not yet competing at Master, NW3, or higher levels. A handler may only have one class spot with one dog.

Drop-In Classes
Conformation Drop-In Classes Starting September 8 @ 10:30-11:30. No signup is required. For details go to this link Conformation Class Information. For schedule: Class Calendar Proof Vaccination is required. $5 per session for members/$10 per session non members
Problem Solving Drop in Class- Starting October 7th @ 10:45. This is a drop in type class with an instructor who will help you work on Obedience/Rally Skills with your dog. Please have something specific that you would like help with. This is not a behavior management class. Proof of Vaccination is required. There will be a signup for each class. Class will be limited to 6 dogs. Price is $10/class
Competition Open/Utility Proofing - Wednesdays 1-3PM starting September 6th. These sessions are for proofing open and utility obedience exercises. Dogs must be training at the competition open or utility levels. Participants will help each other with elements of exercises, but there is no instructor to provide training. Dogs will be training in close proximity to other dogs so must be under control and work safely near other dogs. This is a drop in class so signup is necessary. Proof of Vaccination is required. Price is $10/person/per session.
Open Ring & Practice Time for Members
Open Ring for Club Members
Description: This "class" is for CDTC members who want to practice with their dogs in a ring. This is a 6 week session sign up. No instructor is present and other members may also be signed up for use of that ring at the same time. Registration is required and it is the responsibility of the members signed up to work out a rotation to allow everyone to use the ring. This is not open to non-club members.
