Charlotte Dog Training Club offers three class sessions: January, March and September
 
All classes are held one night a week on either Monday or Wednesday evening at Piedmont Kennel Club. Exact times and days for specific classes are detailed in the application for each class session.
 
SPRING OBEDIENCE/RALLY CLASSES 2010
 
Applications will be available for our Spring session in February 2010. Please check back then for more information and an Application.

Puppy (3-7 months): In this class puppies will learn how to learn and begin basic obedience such as sit, down, and come. Instructors will provide lots of information for the handler and lots of learning and socialization for the puppy.
 
Pet Beginner: This is a basic class for handlers and dogs to learn skills that will make the dog easier to live with. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be taught as well as exercises necessary for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.
 
CGC/Intro to Therapy: Dogs with some previous training can brush up on basic obedience skills, controlled walking on a leash, walking through a crowd, reaction to distraction and supervised separation. The exercises necessary for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test will be practiced in preparation for testing as well as the skills necessary to pass testing for therapy work (dogs must be at least 1 yr old to test for therapy work, although dogs can be younger than 1 to attend the class).
 
Advanced Beginner: This class will strengthen the skills learned in the Pet Beginner class and add new ones including the introduction of AKC novice exercises such as heeling, stand for examination, and stays. There will be a test for this class during orientation, so bring your dog. (Dogs must be over 1 yr old)
 
Novice: This class follows advanced beginner. For those who are interested in showing in the obedience ring, it is an introduction to novice ring procedure and will nail down the dogs’ and handlers’ ability to do each novice obedience exercise. For those who are getting ready to show, the novice exercises will be perfected with distractions and proofing. There will be a test for this class during orientation, so bring your dog (this requirement is waived for dogs who have already been enrolled in a Novice I or II class at CDTC).
 
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy (3-7 months):  STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsibility.  The program is based on the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program but is geared especially towards puppies.  In this class puppies will learn how to learn and begin basic obedience such as sit, down, and come. Instructors will provide lots of information for the handler and lots of learning and socialization for the puppy.

Pet Beginner: This is a basic class for handlers and dogs to learn skills that will make the dog easier to live with. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be taught as well as exercises necessary for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.


D.A.R.E.  – Dream  Achieve  Reach  Enjoy  (aka Shy Dog Class): This class will help build confidence in your shy or insecure dog with fun games and instruction.

Novice 1: This class follows advanced beginner. For those who are interested in showing in the obedience ring, it is an introduction to novice ring procedure and will nail down the dogs’ and handlers’ ability to do each novice obedience exercise. For those who are getting ready to show, the novice exercises will be perfected with distractions and proofing. There will be a test for this class during orientation, so bring your dog (this requirement is waived for dogs who have already been enrolled in a Novice I or II class at CDTC).

 

Crate Games:  Based on methods developed by Susan Garrett for focus, motivation, self-control, speedy and dependable recall, distance skills and much more!

Advanced Heeling (4 weeks):  Great heeling is based on ATTENTION!  Perfect your heeling using games, food, toys and proofing for distractions.  This class will be offered during the first four weeks of the winter session (just in time for our obedience trial).

Open/Utility Skills (4 weeks):  This will be a four week class emphasizing the skills taught in Utility.  Methods to teach go outs, scent discrimination, directed jumping, signals and moving stand will be introduced and practiced as time allows in the four weeks.  Your dog MUST have off-lead control and a solid retrieve to take this class, no exceptions.

AGILITY (Indoors)

Intro to Agility: This class will get you started in the exciting sport of agility!  Basic exercises such as targeting & sending; turning; verbal directionals; and beginning weaving will be introduced to you and your dog.  Prerequisites:  A foundation in beginning obedience & clicker or instructor approval.

RALLY

Rally Advanced/Excellent:  Dogs and handlers must at least be competing in rally novice to be in this class.  The advanced and excellent rally signs and exercises will be taught, and courses will be set up.

Competitive Edge: Focus on Attention, Attitude and Fun. This is a class for dogs going into competition obedience and agility to build motivation and drive. This class is an important building block for a successful dog and handler team.
 
Rally Novice: This class is for dogs and handlers who have knowledge of basic obedience exercises as taught in the Advanced Beginner class. Rally exercises, signs, and procedures will be introduced. Novice to advanced rally courses will be set up as the class progresses.
 
Rally Advanced/Excellent: Dogs and handlers must at least be competing in rally novice to be in this class. The advanced and excellent rally signs and exercises will be taught, and courses will be set up.
 

TRACKING

Introduction to Tracking:  The goal of this class is to introduce the handler and dog to the AKC sport of tracking.  The following skills will be taught: a start routine for your dog and consistency of starts, article indication, learning how to read your dog when tracking, restarting your dog, turns, and some basics of track laying.  This class will meet five times at Rural Hill Farm in Huntersville.  Exact dates will be determined when the class schedule is posted.
